The FAI’s Coach Education Pathway 2017-2020 has been tailored to suit the needs to coaches whose ambitions are to work in different strands of the game – grassroots and volunteer level to elite/professional level.  The significant change to the grassroots pathway means that now coaches enter in the reality based learning model at the level they are coaching.

"Since 2016, we have been working closely within the Player Development Plan Recommendation on coach education to “Increase coaching standards and recommended coaching levels at all age groups”. To achieve this, we have introduced a number of key steps, first aligning the coaching pathway with the player development plan. Secondly redeveloping the Grassroots course to align with the theory of reality based learning and aligning all courses to a competency model. The introduction of a new progress route based on coaches individual learning needs and experiential learning, with age specific courses for coaches to enter at the level in which the player they are working with. An example being coaches working with adults entering at the Adult Intro level. The introduction of the National Licences, at National D and C, to bridge the gap between the grassroots and UEFA Licence pathway. Introducing the Elite Grassroots Licence to allow Grassroots coaches an alternative option to progressing to the UEFA Licences. The Elite Grassroots Licence allows amateur coaches working within grassroots game an opportunity to be acknowledged as an Elite coach in a much more costs effective course than the UEFA Licences which are directed to coaches working and actively aiming to work within the professional game. The introduction of specialist licence courses such as the Football For All (FFA), the Goalkeeping and Futsal Pathways. At the highest level the introduction of the Elite Youth ‘A’ Licence gives A Licence coaches another opportunity for learning with previously the only option to move forward being the UEFA Pro Licence. The elite youth licence develops coaches and prepares them to work as a Head of Youth Development and or Director of Coaching.  All of the above identify the steps we have taken and are taking to ensure to continue to grow coaches and coach education with the FAI and all of the above is aimed at achieving the main aims of the Player Development Plan which is “to create better players for the future
